Each one-hour session is held live on Zoom. You’ll practice focused sword movement — not martial arts training driving you to push beyond your limit, but controlled, intentional techniques that build coordination and presence. The intensity stays low to moderate, focusing more on discovery and learning rather than building physical strength.

Typical Flow of a Session

The session opens 30 minutes before the official start time.

Ace will be warming up during this time, and you are welcome to join if you so desire, though this is entirely optional.

Details

This time is only meant to be a buffer, so you may join and spend the time however you wish.

You’re equally free to join right at the start of the lesson.

Opening Bow

We begin with a bow.

We look briefly at how etiquette shifted across different social classes and historical periods.

Foundations

We learn basic stances and how to hold a katana properly.

Details

The focus is not speed or strength, but posture, balance, and clarity. Small adjustments go a long way when practice compiles.

No prior experience is needed.

Sword Exercises

We practice controlled swings in multiple directions with movement.

Details

These exercises are about coordination and efficiency. How the body supports the blade, and how intention changes appearance.

Intensity remains low to moderate.

Application

Once the fundamentals are in place, we explore how they translate into performance.

Details

This may include:

  • Different styles of sheathing (including spin sheathing)
  • Cuts designed for visual impact
  • Simple choreography

Closing

We end the formal lesson with a bow.

Afterward, there’s time for casual conversation.

Details

Questions, historical curiosities, film references, performance details — anything related is welcome.

You’re absolutely free to leave at the end of the hour. The additional time is simply there for those who want to hang around a little longer.
